My discussion of the Battle of Amiens was discussed in my entry dated May 6, 2024 but here is a quick recap. This was their most successful and easiest battle of all, but that was only the beginning. This battle commenced the hundred-day offensive which was a long and very bloody operation. It was early in the hundred-day offensive, August 8, 1918, that James was wounded.
Since it was close to the end of the war it was also his final battle.
That means that I have now discussed all of James’ major battles.
Let me review them in order:
Vimy Ridge April 8, 1917
Odds of being injured 7%
Odds of being killed 3.6%
Hill 70 August 15, 1917
Odds of being injured 7.4% (13.9% overall)
Odds of being killed 1.6% (5.1% overall)
Passchendaele July 31, 1917
Odds of being injured 12% (24.3% overall)
Odds of being killed 4% (8.9% overall)
The Battle of Amiens (100-day offensive) August 8, 1918
Odds of being injured 32.9% (49.1% overall)
Odds of being killed 6.8% (15.1% overall)
Overall, his odds of being killed or wounded was 56.8%
I wonder what James would have thought if he’d known at the beginning of the war that he had a 50% chance of being wounded and a 15% chance of dying. He had roughly 50/50 odds of coming home unscathed.
