Utah

Yesterday after work Lisa, Sarah, Alex and I all headed for Utah. Alex starts school two days after Sarah's wedding so we figured we would come now to take care of all the school stuff before we get  heavy into wedding plans. That way when we're into the wedding we don't have to worry about Alex. Just up from our house we turned the corner onto Sparren Ave and this is what we saw. That shooter in Colorado grew up just around the corner from us and when I saw all of the news vehicles and the helicopters over head my heart went out to his parents. So much tragedy all around.

We drove through the night and arrived at the Sanchez's at 5:30 this morning. We had four drivers so it wasn't so bad. After a couple hours of sleep we headed out to play. Lisa, Molly and Alycia went shopping and the rest of us went to the pool. We had a blast. The pool was entirely for play and we played until we were wrinkled up like prunes.

Today I was supposed to run ten miles but arriving at 5:30 messed up all the plans. By the time I woke up in the was in the 90's so I figured we would run late in the evening but then we got free tickets to the Mormon Tabernacle Choirs Pioneer Day. They had a guest star named Kathrine Jenkins. I've never heard of her but supposedly she's famous. Today I learned that my phone has a panorama function so I tried it out on the conference center. I like it. They would let us take any pictures during the show so you're stuck with this.

Unfortunately by the time we got home it was way too late to run. We are going to run at 6:00 Monday morning. It shouldn't be too hot then.

Running Home

Today I ran home from work. According to my training schedule I needed to run five miles today and I only live 7 miles from work so it seemed like to good idea. Alex started working for my company on Tuesday and so we've been riding together. He wanted the car after work so it seemed like just another good excuse to run. My time is a little bit slower mostly because there are a lot of lights on the road but it was still quite fun. The Penasquitos canyon separates Mira Mesa (where I work) from Penasquitos (where I live) so when I drive home I need to go around the canyon but where I ran I ran right through it. That was kind of nice because ever since I broke my toe I've been avoiding running on trails. Today was the first time I've run on a trail since I could run again. It was fun but I was scared the whole time. Take a look at the picture and you will know why I love trail running so much. Running on the road kind of sucks but I haven't tripped yet. I sometimes wonder if breathing all that exhaust fumes does more harm than good but I do like running.

Wicked

Today was a very busy but fun filled day. According to the schedule I'm following for my marathon training today was an eight mile day. Sarah and I had decided that we would run to the beach but this morning she was suffering from a menstrually aggravated bout of IBS so she told me to go without her. Ben and Sharley were here last night however so Ben and I headed for Torrey Pines at 8:00 this morning. It still seems incomprehensible to me that I can run eight miles. Of course how can you complain about running eight miles when you get to end up here.

Running with Ben pushed me so that I miraculously ran a 9.8 minute mile pace for the entire 8.3 mile run. It is the longest I have ever run in my life and one of my faster paces. Unfortunately for Ben however it was probably one of his slower runs.  I felt bad for Sarah though. After we left she got up and made the same run but about an hour after us. That is a long way to run alone and even worse while you're cramping. Poor girl.

For our wedding anniversary Lisa and I bought tickets to the play "Wicked". This afternoon we went to that. It was a very good play and I really enjoyed it. We took Sarah with us and I think she enjoyed it more than either of us. She was very excited.

We didn't get much work accomplished today but it was a fun day and it was great to see Ben and Sharley.

Alisha Peterson's Wedding

Today was a normal day at work. Tonight we had a wedding. Alisha Peterson got married today and Sharley was one of the bridesmaids. That was good because that meant they came to visit last night and tonight they will be here again. Any excuse to visit with my kids. The reception was at the Power House Park in Del Mar. This is the view from the reception area. We really do live in a beautiful city.

Thirty One Years

The other day I was bemoaning the fact that I haven't posted a blog in a very long time. As I sat there wondering why this is the case it dawned on me that there are several reasons why.

First - there is this new app for smart phones called "Instagram". You can snap a picture and instantly post it with a short comment for all of your friends to see. It is very easy to do and for me at least, it takes away some of the urgency I used to feel about letting my kids (and those friends who care) in on what I'm doing. The problem is that not all of my kids have smart phones and it doesn't really lend itself for expounding much on how I feel about things.

Second - my calling as Coordinator in the temple is taking up much more time than I anticipated it would. My Tuesday evenings and Wednesday evenings are spent preparing a schedule and then of course Thursday evening I am at the temple. There goes three out of four evenings of the week.

Third - my two other callings (Sunday School President and High Priest Secretary) take up at least another evening.

Fourth - I now have two kids at home and I really like to play with them while I can.

Having said all of that I am recommitting myself to make more frequent and much shorter postings even if it is just to say I'm still alive.

My short message for today is let everyone know that today my wife and I celebrated thirty one years of marriage. I have no idea why she agreed to marry me but I'm sure glad that she did.
