My first year at BYU was great and I loved every minute of it. Well once I got settled in I did. Living in the city was a new experience for me and I was amazed at the convenience of everything. I especially remember being very surprised when we went to a McDonald's and they gave us our hamburgers the instant we ordered them. I wondered how on earth they knew I was going to order that hamburger before I even got into the store. The whole concept of preparing a hamburger in advance in anticipation that someone might order it was foreign to me.I had decided that I was going to be a Civil Engineer. That decision was largely influenced by Mark. He was a civil engineer and was perhaps the smartest person I had ever met. I remember one time he was at our house and I told him about a cool idea I had where I wanted to make a submarine out of 45 gallon drums. Of course being a young and stupid teenager there were many things I didn't yet understand like the tremendous compressive force of water. My hypothetical submarine wasn't pressurized so Mark whips out a piece of paper and calculated the hoop stress of a 45 gallon drum and the pressure of the water it would be in. He told me that my submarine would collapse once it got to about fifteen feet deep. I was so dissappointed but so impressed. I wanted to be just like him. I wanted to be able to calculate those things. So that is why I started my engineering career as a Civil Engineer.
So after the mildest winter of my entire life my school year was finally over and it was time to go back home. There was no doubt in my mind that I would be going back to BYU after my mission. I loved it there.

Einsteins theory of relativity states that gravity slows down time. The GPS satellites have very accurate atomic clocks and they actually have to compensate for the fact that the clocks on earth run slower than the clocks in space since the gravity on earth is stronger than it is in space.----------------------------------------------

That's very interesting how you chose your career. One never knows the influence they may have on someone's life.
I guess you wouldn't know but I never became a Civil Engineer. For a number of reasons I will go into later I switched to Materials Engineering but I started out in Civil.
and to think you raised sons who are going to be lawyers, and have a musician for a daughter!! Crazy~
Alex isn't going to be a lawyer and Brandon is still very much into the sciences. Remember he has a degree in biochemistry and he and Dad talk and talk and talk at great length about all that they are going to invent etc.
Hmmm.....Very interesting! I did not know.
