Wednesday

On the Wednesday after Christmas we decided to hike the slot canyon. It is about a mile so closer to a walk than a hike. I started out with June who in this picture does not look to pleased but who was actually quite happy.
It was a slow hike because we had a ton of little kids. It may have been slow but it was a ton of fun watching all of them. They really did enjoy being outside where they could stretch their legs (and their lungs).
Once we got to the canyon we were all funneled into the canyon and that is when I began to worry. We had brought Loki, and I remembered that at the end we have to climb a ladder to get out of the canyon. Normally we would have just gone for it and tried. I’m sure we could have got him up the ladder.
The problem was that there were a lot of people and the people behind us would have not been happy to wait longer than they already had to just to get a dog up the ladder. I was still going to go for it when we finally came to a sign that said no dogs.

Shortly after I took this picture I took Loki and went around to meet the family on the other end of the canyon. In case you’re wondering why Piper is on her hands and knees, they are all fox’s.
I wonder why they call this a “slot” canyon?
Shortly after I got around to the top of the Canyon, they all started to pop their heads up.
Once everyone was up we took another picture. Do you notice the fox’s?
The view from the top is amazing. This is the San Elijo Lagoon Estuary.
I headed into the Canyon with June but exited it with Kit. I love all my grandkids but little girls have a special place in my heart.
After the hike, we decided to go tide pooling. Ben and Sharley and their family had planned a couple days at Lego Land so they had to leave, but the rest of us decided to go to a nearby site that was supposed to have good tide pools. They weren’t the best tide pools but as a last minute decision we didn’t have many options. All the others were too far away.

As it turned out the kids were much more interested in the beach than they were in tide pools anyway. The instant we got on the sand they headed straight into the water. It was not a warm day but we figured we’d let them have their fun and we would leave once they were too cold to enjoy it.
As they were playing in the water a larger wave came in and swamped them all. It was quite funny and poor June got completely tumbled. I was worried she would start crying but as she surfaced she thought it was fun.

All we saw at the tide pools were a bunch of sea anemones which Sawyer loved to stick his finger in and have it curl up around his finger. They also found a good-sized crab.

There are more stars in space than there are grains of sand on every beach on Earth.
